HINGE Leads 20-Site International Transaction

The team at HINGE Brokers is pleased to announce the successful sale of a 20-site early education group located in the Connecticut market. HINGE acted as advisors to the seller, Educational Playcare, and its founders, Jane Porterfield and Gerry Pastor.

Educational Playcare was founded in 1986 and provides a high-quality early learning environment for up to 4,300 children from the age of six weeks to five years, as well as afterschool care for children up to the age of twelve. The industry has long recognized Educational Playcare as a school that represents the highest quality possible in the United States, and, as a result, HINGE was able to generate more than a dozen offers from domestic and international investors who felt that the company would be a platform for future growth. Ultimately, after a thorough vetting process, HINGE and the sellers determined that Busy Bees, a U.K. based early learning brand, had the best combination of price, culture and complementary business strategy.

HINGE has a long history with the sold company—from lending it real estate expertise to helping grow the company over the last 10 years.

Gerry and Jane said, “With their total backroom support and exhaustive rolodex of potential buyers, to their intimate knowledge of our business and industry, we can't imagine anyone else getting us the same result. It also didn't hurt that they are extraordinary therapists as well.”

The buyer, Busy Bees, now cares for more than 55,000 children across 630 sites globally, including its centers in the U.K. and Ireland, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, Australia, Italy and now in the United States.

According to Simon Irons, Group CEO of Busy Bees: “For over 35 years Busy Bees has provided outstanding care for children in local communities across the world. We are pleased to welcome Educational Playcare to the Busy Bees family and, in doing so, supporting more children, families and staff than ever before. These latest acquisitions allow us to enter a new market in the United States, strengthening our global portfolio and bringing further talent into the Busy Bees business.”

Jane Porterfield, Founder of Educational Playcare, also commented: “After a period of diligent consideration we are very happy that we have chosen the right path for Educational Playcare by partnering with Busy Bees. I see clearly how our mission to deliver the highest quality experience for families, their children and our employees closely aligns with Busy Bees’ core values and excellent reputation for providing high quality care. We are excited that they will build on our success as a quality educational and developmental childcare provider with their invaluable support. Both management teams will endeavor to deliver a seamless transition for everyone involved.”
